Steve Olson is a Southern California skateboarder and artist, inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2014. Coming out of the late-’70s park-and-pool era, he’s widely credited with pushing a punk aesthetic and attitude straight into skating, black denim, loud music, faster lines, and making it stick. In 1979 he turned pro and quickly became a defining presence on decks and magazine covers.
On the hardware side, Olson was among the early testers of Independent Trucks’ Stage 1 prototypes, and his Santa Cruz checkerboard model is often cited as the first full-board graphic on seven-ply maple; a look and feel that traveled through scenes well beyond the parks. He capped 1979 with Skateboarder magazine’s “Skateboarder of the Year” honor, underscoring how fast his impact landed.

Olson kept crossing lanes after contests: making art, showing in galleries, and collaborating in fashion while staying tied to skate culture. He’s been profiled as a skater-turned-artist who carried that same direct energy into his work, and over the years he’s had guest boards with crews he respects, including Skaterbuilt, keeping the connection between riding, style, and design tight.
